WEEK 7 — DAY 4
纲目
Outline
1III. Genesis 32:22-32 relates a vital and crucial experience in the life of Jacob—his being broken:
2A. The Lord wrestled with Jacob in order to expose to him how natural he was and how great his natural strength was—v. 24:
31. The Lord "touched the socket of Jacob's hip at the thigh muscle" (v. 32); the touching of the socket of Jacob's hip at the thigh muscle, the strongest muscle in the body, signifies the touching of Jacob's natural life, his natural strength—v. 25.
42. After Jacob was broken by God, outwardly he was the same as before, but inwardly his natural life had been dealt with; it was not the outward living that was touched by the Lord but the inward, natural strength that was broken by Him—33:1-4; 32:25, 32.
5B. Jacob's experience shows us that God has to break our natural life, that He has to touch our natural life in a drastic way—vv. 22-32:
61. The way of religion is to change man's outward behavior; the way of God in His economy is to touch man's inward life in order to change his inward being—2 Cor. 4:16.
72. When the Lord touches us at a certain crucial spot, we are lame and can no longer be the same in our inward being; from then on, we limp and are no longer whole—Gen. 32:25, 31.

8Gen. 32:24-25 And Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until the break of dawn. And when the man saw that He did not prevail against him, He touched the socket of his hip; and the socket of Jacob’s hip was dislocated as he wrestled with Him.
92 Cor. 4:16 …Though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day.
10Genesis 32:22-32 relates a crucial experience in the life of Jacob, God’s chosen one. This is truly an extraordinary portion of the holy Word.
11As Jacob was left alone, “a man wrestled with him until the break of dawn” (v. 24). This combatant was not an angel but Jehovah Himself in the form of a man…Much to Jacob’s surprise, in the depths of the night, while he was desperate, a man came to him trying His best to pin him down. Because Jacob would not give in, the two of them wrestled all night until the break of dawn. Before this, Jacob was afraid of being slaughtered. Now, he was afraid of being defeated in this wrestling match, and he thrust all his energy into the struggle. The Lord did not subdue him immediately so that He might expose to Jacob how natural he was and how great his natural strength was. Eventually, the Lord touched the socket of Jacob’s hip, causing him to become lame. (Life-study of Genesis, pp. 953, 945-946)

12With Jacob, Jehovah’s touching was once for all. But with us, there may be several touchings. Nevertheless, the principle is the same. Many of us can testify that since the day we first loved the Lord, especially since we came into the church life and began to follow the Lord in His recovery, we found ourselves in circumstances where we were being dealt with. We were constantly wrestling…One day the Lord suddenly touched us, and we came out lame. After that, we were not the same. Do not expect that by one touch your whole living will be changed and that you will be totally transformed. No, with Jacob, the touch occurred in Genesis 32, but the maturity, the ripening, was not fully manifested until chapter 47…After being touched by God, in chapter 33, apparently, he had not changed very much, but actually, in life, he had had a great change… From then on, the impression he gave to people was quite different. When he bowed down to Esau, he was still natural, but his limp testified to Jehovah’s touching…Esau did not see a whole Jacob but a crippled one. Here we see that while there was no change in his living, a change had occurred in his life. It was not the outward living that was touched by Jehovah; it was the inward, natural strength that was touched by Him.
13The Lord is not only concerned with changing our outward living; He desires even more to touch our natural life…In the eyes of God, there is not much difference between losing your temper with your wife or controlling it. If you lose your temper, you are you, and if you control your temper, you are still you. But once Jacob had been touched, though outwardly he was the same as before, inwardly, his natural life had been dealt with. Humanly speaking, of course, I like to see the brothers and sisters change their attitudes toward their spouses. But deep within, if their inward being remains the same, I do not appreciate this outward change…It is not a matter of outward change or improvement; it is a matter of inward touching. Your inward sinew, your inward natural strength, must be touched by the Lord. We all need this touch.
14After we wrestle for a while, we will have the deep conviction that we have been touched…Whenever He touches a particular part, we are lame and can no longer be the same in our inward being. From then on, we limp and are no longer whole. (Life-study of Genesis, pp. 960-961)
